Energy and nature, an unbreakable bond

We produce energy and we do so exclusively from renewable sources. This characteristic places us at the forefront of promoting the country's energy transition and makes us an active player in fighting climate change.

Our renewable energy production contributes significantly to the national fuel mix. We are amongst Italy's hydroelectric leading producers and have an industrial plan to double our installed capacity by 2029.

See our climate strategy.

Our renewable energy sources

Hydroelectric
Hydroelectric power is at the heart of our history and represents the main source of our production. We operate 32 hydroelectric power plants and 6 large dams, a plant asset that positions us among the leading national producers of energy from water sources.
Photovoltaic
We have chosen to invest in photovoltaics to diversify our production and accelerate the energy transition. We currently have 60 plants. Our strategic plan calls for further expansion of photovoltaic and agrivoltaic capacity, including the development of innovative projects that integrate energy production with agricultural activities.
Wind
Wind energy is a key element of our growth and geographic diversification strategy. With nine wind farms spread across five Italian regions, we contribute significantly to national energy production. The installed capacity of our wind fleet varies considerably: our smallest plant, in Saint-Denis, has only three wind turbines, while the largest, in Piansano, has 21.

Hydroelectric power at the service of the local area

Our hydroelectric power plants play a very important role in land management and the operation of the national grid.

They are a tool for managing the effects of climate change
The presence of hydroelectric plants is a key element in mitigating hydrogeological risk. During heavy rainfall, the reservoirs associated with hydroelectric plants act as hydraulic regulation systems, temporarily storing excess water, reducing the flow of downstream watercourses, and mitigating flood peaks.
They contribute to balancing the grid
The Valpelline, Gressoney, Perrères, and Maën-Cignana power plants are authorized by Terna to provide dispatching services on the Italian National Transmission Grid and on the MRR (Market Replacement Reserve) market. Thanks to their ability to rapidly increase and decrease energy production, these plants guarantee flexibility and security to the electricity grid.
They guarantee service continuity
Our power plants play a key role in black start service. In the event of a blackout in the national grid, the power plants in Valpelline, Avise, Perrères, Maën, Covalou, Pont-Saint-Martin, Gressoney, Sendren, and Zuino are fit to restore power to a portion of the grid, thus contributing to the process of reactivating the national service. In addition, some of our hydroelectric power plants, operating in "island" mode, can guarantee the supply of electricity to the side valleys in the event of a grid outage.

Efficient management of strategic assets

To enhance and strategically manage our hydroelectric, photovoltaic, and wind power generation assets, we are committed to a series of measures aimed at innovation and efficiency.

Hydroelectric

The revamping of our hydroelectric plants is a highly complex operation that goes beyond simple maintenance. It is a process of complete modernization, where the main components of the plants are upgraded with the most advanced technologies available on the market.

Revamping aims not only to replace worn parts, but also to redesign them to maximize performance. The goal is twofold: on the one hand, to significantly increase productivity, generating more clean energy from the same amount of water resources; on the other hand, to increase overall efficiency, reducing losses and optimizing plant operation in all conditions.

Revamping projects

Wind

One of our strategic initiatives is the redevelopment of wind farms through reblading. This process involves replacing turbine blades with technologically advanced versions designed to optimize aerodynamic performance.

Photovoltaic

Our photovoltaic projects limit land use, promote environmental recovery, and encourage integration with the agricultural sector: they are therefore concrete examples of the integration of innovative strategies with environmental and landscape sustainability. These include:

  • agrivoltaics, which combines agricultural production with photovoltaic energy production;
  • floating photovoltaics, which involves the installation of solar panels in reservoirs and ponds;
  • photovoltaics in quarries, which allows new plants to be built in disused mining areas, promoting their recovery.

These are optimal solutions for energy production, with positive economic and environmental benefits.

Our projects also include specific measures to protect biodiversity and restore ecosystems in the areas affected by the plants, such as the planting of trees, hedges, and herbaceous plants.

The frontier of energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is a pillar of the ecological transition and consists of rationalizing and reducing energy consumption. It is not only a good practice, but also a response to a specific and binding target set by the European Union, which has raised its goals to reduce final energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030.

Through our dedicated subholding company, CVA Smart Energy, we oversee all energy efficiency activities. We operate in a variety of areas: from the renovation of residential buildings, accommodation facilities, and industrial complexes to the maintenance of heating and electrical systems, including co/trigeneration solutions.

We take care of the design of the interventions and the management of the paperwork to obtain tax incentives, all while guaranteeing results with energy performance contracts (EPCs).

Carbon neutral events

We always take care to offset the emissions produced by the events and activities we carry out, in line with our environmental mission and climate change mitigation goals.
